National Aboriginal & Torres Strait Islander Higher Education Consortium
Akaltye-arle-anthemeye, teaching is a really sacred thing akaltye-irrenheke, constantly learning; arintyeke, seeking it as forever ongoing; imerneheke, being shown continuously. That is how it was and is. (MK Turner Report 2023)

NATISHEC held its first Elders and Knowledge Holders Summit, held at Batchelor Institute of Indigenous Tertiary Education, on the Traditional Lands of the Kungarakan and Warai Peoples on Monday 31 July 2023  in person and online.

Led by Kungarakan Traditional Owner-Custodian and Batchelor Elder Academic Associate Professor Aunty Sue Stanton and NATSIHEC Vice President Eldership Professor N’arweet Carolyn Briggs AM the Elders Summit brought the knowledge of our Elders and Knowledge Holders together to discuss important issues across the higher education sector and within our communities.

On this day the Elders envisioned a self-determined education system and an Indigenous university. One that recognised innovation and expertise of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander ways of Being, Knowing and Doing. The Elders and Knowledge Holders call for Australia to recognise Indigenous educational excellence and put forward Batchelor Institute of Indigenous Tertiary Education, as a long standing Indigenous dual sector higher education provider, to be our first Indigenous University.

Now on Batchelor’s 50th Anniversary NATSIHEC presents the Batchelor Statement.

Please support the vision of our Elders and communities and let us join together to ensure an Indigenous University becomes our future.
